Development of a cable maintenance robot system

2026-04-06 08:16:42 · · #1
Abstract: The cable maintenance robot represents the first application of special robot technology in the maintenance of cable-stayed bridge cables. A modular mechanical design concept was proposed, and a novel climbing mechanism and various working mechanisms suitable for cables of any inclination were developed. This system can perform a series of maintenance tasks, including online inspection, cleaning, and painting of the cables, overcoming the inefficiencies, high costs, and poor safety associated with the manual methods commonly used for cable maintenance in cable-stayed bridges both domestically and internationally. Keywords : Special robot; Cable-stayed bridge cable; Maintenance mechanism Cable-stayed bridges, as a modern type of bridge, are widely used worldwide. Regular online inspection, cleaning, and painting of the cables of cable-stayed bridges are essential. Currently, there are two main methods for cable maintenance both domestically and internationally: one is using a hydraulic lifting platform for the maintenance of cables in small cable-stayed bridges; the other is using pre-installed lifting points on the tower top, with steel cables to drag a basket carrying workers along the cables for maintenance. The former method has a very limited working range, while the latter manual method is not only inefficient and costly, but also poses a safety risk to workers. Therefore, this paper proposes using specialized robotic technology for automated cable maintenance. 0. Modular Mechanical Design Concept In developing the cable robot system, a modular mechanical design concept was proposed. The cable robot is divided into two main modules: a climbing mechanism and an operating mechanism. These two modules are integrated into a single unit through a standard module interface. The climbing mechanism and the operating mechanism are designed independently without interference, allowing for the design of multiple test schemes on each without affecting the design of other modules. This improves design efficiency and reduces design costs. Different operating mechanism modules can be used for different cable maintenance tasks, providing excellent functional expandability.
