Design of traction inverter control unit for maglev train

Abstract : Maglev trains use VVVF frequency converters to control the operation of induction linear motors, which places high demands on the reliability of the traction frequency converter control system. This article introduces a design scheme for a traction frequency converter control system that balances software flexibility and hardware real-time performance, rationally allocating tasks between software and hardware to improve system reliability. Keywords : Maglev train; traction frequency converter; control unit; reliability 0 Introduction Magnetic levitation trains utilize electromagnetic attraction or electro-repulsion to levitate the train above the track, with linear motors providing a traction force parallel to the track to drive the vehicle. Considering practical needs and economic factors, China's medium- and low-speed maglev trains typically control the operation of short-stator induction linear motors through onboard inverters. A reliable traction control system is crucial for the safe operation of the train, enabling traction and electric braking at higher speeds. The traction control system of a maglev train is implemented by a multi-microcomputer system connected to the Train Communication Network (TCN), including a locomotive control level, a transmission control level, and a vehicle bus connecting the two. This article focuses on the design of the traction frequency converter control unit, which serves as the transmission-level control system. 1. Traction Inverter Control Unit Function The traction inverter control unit implements closed-loop speed control of the short-primary linear induction motor, providing appropriate traction force and speed. Figure 1 shows the main circuit of the traction inverter, which includes not only the inverter circuit controlling the linear induction motor but also components such as contactors protecting the inverter's main circuit. When a fault occurs in the inverter, the traction inverter control unit identifies the fault, issues protection commands, and ensures the inverter's safety.
