Application of PLC and frequency converter in boring machine tools

Based on our production needs, our company independently designed a simplified combination boring machine. After a period of use, we improved the original relay-contactor control method of the electrical system, adopting a PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) control scheme. This reduced the size of the electrical control device, eliminated complex wiring, improved operational reliability, and reduced the workload of machine tool maintenance personnel. 1. Original Electrical Control System of the Machine Tool This machine tool is equipped with a power head motor, two vertical high-speed motors, a horizontal high-speed motor, a vertical feed motor, and a work feed motor. Since this machine tool was designed and manufactured according to our company's production needs, the original electrical design, adhering to the principle of economy, used ordinary motors for all motors, resulting in the same feed speed for workpieces of various materials. This affected machining accuracy and work efficiency. The original electrical control system used relay-contactor control, with both jog and automatic modes in the horizontal and vertical directions. The actions in both directions had interlocking functions, resulting in a large number of electrical components, especially too many intermediate relay contacts, and complex wiring. Furthermore, the use of numerous contactors and relays led to high noise and a high failure rate. 2. Improvements to the Electrical Components Based on the machine tool's technological processes and machining operations, we selected the JX-4T007G variable frequency drive (VFD) and replaced the feed motor with a YVP VFD three-phase asynchronous motor compatible with the VFD. This VFD utilizes the latest power modules and microcontroller control, employing advanced voltage space vector control to achieve intelligent control functions such as automatic torque boosting, automatic slip compensation, automatic voltage adjustment, and automatic energy-saving operation. It features high precision, low noise, high torque, and reliable performance. Furthermore, it provides rapid and effective protection against faults such as overcurrent, overvoltage, overload, undervoltage, overheating, short circuit, and phase loss, ensuring the VFD's safety. Using this VFD and its matching motor together is an ideal product for energy-saving retrofitting of AC speed-regulating motors and equipment upgrades.
