Application of SRD high-efficiency switched reluctance motors in oil fields

Abstract : Based on the analysis of existing motor usage, this paper introduces the working principle, structural composition, main technical indicators, functional characteristics, and application of a new type of high-efficiency switched reluctance motor in oilfield production. The energy-saving effect of this motor in the Gudong Oilfield trial application is discussed. Field application results show that this new motor has superior performance and reliable operation. It can effectively solve the problem of low operating efficiency of pumping unit motors, improve the comprehensive utilization rate of electrical energy in the pumping unit system, and has good potential for widespread application. Keywords : Switched reluctance motor, high efficiency, energy saving, application 1 Introduction Currently, the two most widely used pumping units in China are beam pumping units and beamless pumping units, with beam pumping units being the main type. Most of the motors used in these units are Y-series motors. Beam pumping units employ direct-start under load, requiring a large starting torque and a motor starting current of 6-8 times the rated current. To meet these starting requirements, the motors used are high-powered. However, the required torque during operation is relatively low, with over 90% of the motors operating below 50% load. For a long time, the motors used in pumping units have mostly operated under light load, resulting in extremely low load rates, high power losses, and significant energy waste. Electricity consumption in pumping units accounts for a large proportion of oilfield production electricity consumption, representing approximately one-third of the total oilfield development cost. Furthermore, stroke adjustment is extremely inconvenient. To save on crude oil extraction costs, reduce unit consumption, improve the efficiency of mechanical pumping systems, and enhance corporate economic benefits, oilfields have actively conducted research, development, and promotion of energy-saving equipment for oil wells for many years, achieving certain energy-saving and consumption-reducing effects. Based on investigation and research, this paper proposes adopting the latest domestic energy-saving technology and conducting field trials of SRD high-efficiency switched reluctance speed-regulating motors to achieve the goal of energy saving and consumption reduction in oil wells. 2. Working Principle The SRD high-efficiency switched reluctance speed-regulating motor is a new type of variable speed drive system. Its principle is based on a stator and rotor double salient pole structure, using IGBT switches to control the A, B, and C phase windings, enabling continuous rotor rotation and speed regulation. It mainly consists of three parts: first, the motor itself, which, to increase interchangeability, has the same external appearance as a conventional Y-series motor but a different internal structure; second, the speed controller, whose external appearance is the same as a frequency converter of the same power; and third, the control cabinet. The speed controller converts three-phase AC power into easily controllable, alternately switched three-phase DC power. The windings are powered in one direction only, and there are no windings on the rotor. According to the program requirements, the speed controller supplies power to the stator windings, generating a rotating magnetic field that drives the rotor to rotate, completing the electromechanical energy conversion. High-efficiency switched reluctance motors (SRDs) differ from both AC and DC motors in their operating mode. These motors, often called brushless DC motors, offer superior performance due to the excellent control capabilities of DC power. Representing a significant technological innovation and advancement in the motor field, SRDs are currently high-tech, highly efficient, and high-performance energy-saving motors. Compared to variable frequency drive (VFD) technology, they feature a more advanced speed control system.
