Abstract : This paper introduces the system composition, energy-saving principle, and parameter settings of the variable frequency drive (VFD) speed control technology in the combustion air control system of a glass production line. Operation shows that the VFD speed control technology is simple to operate, easy to maintain, and has good economic benefits. With its increasing maturity, this advanced speed control technology has been applied to many industrial fields and has also played a significant role in other areas. Our factory adopted this advanced speed control technology to upgrade the combustion air control system during the cold repair and technical renovation of a 500t glass production line. 2 Combustion Air VFD Speed Control System 2.1 Process Introduction The melting of glass raw materials in the furnace is accomplished by burning heavy oil. During the combustion process, a fixed amount of air needs to be introduced to assist combustion and achieve complete combustion of the heavy oil. Simultaneously, during oil reversal, the amount of air blown in plays a crucial role in balancing the furnace pressure and stabilizing the furnace temperature. Therefore, the volume of combustion air must be adjusted constantly during production. 2.2 Energy-saving principle of fan speed regulation The common methods for adjusting air volume are: (1) changing the damper opening. (2) changing the fan speed. The pressure-air volume characteristic curve of the fan is shown in Figure 1. R1 is the wind resistance curve of the speed regulation control type (damper opening 100%), R2 and I are the wind resistance curves when the damper is controlled, and n0, n1 and n2 are the different adjustment speeds of the fan. When using damper control: when the air volume is Q1-Q2, the resistance curve changes from R1 to R2, and the fan operating point changes from G1 to G2, the damper control resistance increases significantly; when using speed regulation control.
