Applications of Programmable Logic Controllers and Frequency Converters in Electric Vehicle Control Systems

Abstract : This paper mainly studies the feasibility of a control system for wheeled electric vehicles based on PLC and frequency converter. The structure of the drive system is discussed, and experimental research on the system's hardware and software is conducted. The results show that the control system can accurately control the steering, forward movement, reversing, stopping, and braking of the electric vehicle. This control system provides a new reference for the design of electric vehicle controllers. Keywords : Frequency converter; Programmable logic controller; Control system; Electric vehicle 1 Overview Electric vehicles are a safe, economical, and clean green transportation tool. They not only have unique advantages and competitiveness in terms of energy and environment, but also can more easily achieve the goal of mechatronics using modern control technology, thus possessing broad development prospects. Globally, electric vehicles are still in their initial stage, and they will become a breakthrough point for the structural adjustment of the automotive industry, representing an opportunity for China's automotive industry to achieve leapfrog development. During the "15th Five-Year Plan" period, the development of electric vehicles was listed as a national "863" key technology project, with a planned investment of 1 billion yuan to increase research and development of key technologies and raw materials. Research on electric vehicles mainly focuses on three aspects: power supply, motor, and controller. The controller is the heart of the electric vehicle. New control methods such as variable structure control, fuzzy control, neural network control, and expert systems are gradually being applied to electric vehicles and have achieved certain results. The optimal solution requires further testing in practice. As is well known, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) have a wide range of applications in industrial control. Based on microprocessors, PLCs integrate computer technology, automatic control technology, and communication technology to achieve analog control, open-loop or closed-loop process control, and even build multi-level distributed control systems based on fieldbus. Therefore, the author believes that expanding functionality and integrating modules based on existing mature PLC technology will definitely bring twice the result with half the effort to the development of electric vehicle controllers.
