ZigBee-based wireless logistics and warehousing management system

The market demand for RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, with its advantages of fast identification speed and low cost, has led to its widespread application in logistics and warehousing management. It replaces the barcode inspection method, which can only inspect one box of goods at a time, and offers the advantage of location-based positioning for both goods and forklifts, accelerating the warehousing cycle and significantly improving the management efficiency of warehousing companies. However, RFID readers require wired RS232/485 connections for communication, which brings great inconvenience to system setup and maintenance. To address this, Helicomm has proposed a wireless logistics and warehousing management solution based on ZigBee technology. This solution comprises two main parts: upgrading existing RFID logistics management systems and building new ZigBee logistics management systems. Using a self-organized wireless mesh network of ZigBee modules as the primary communication medium, it significantly shortens the system setup cycle and provides great convenience to end customers. Solution The system structure is shown in the figure. The main upgrade to the existing RFID logistics and warehouse management system involves modifying the wired connection method of the card readers. A ZigBee module is embedded within the RFID card reader, replacing wired connections such as RS232/485 with a self-organized wireless mesh network of ZigBee modules. This makes system setup and maintenance easier. For companies that have not yet installed an RFID logistics and warehouse management system, we propose a comprehensive logistics and warehouse management solution based on ZigBee technology. First, a wireless mesh network is set up within the warehouse using ZigBee card readers according to positioning requirements, especially at the inbound and outbound ports for inbound and outbound detection. This allows the entire system to locate goods with ZigBee tags within the warehouse. Furthermore, forklift drivers with voice communication terminals not only have their location tracked but also support voice communication within the mesh network. The central control unit can allocate forklifts based on the positioning system, improving forklift utilization and significantly increasing the operational efficiency of the warehousing company.
