Abstract: This paper mainly introduces the use of PROFIBUS-DP bus in cigarette making units, replacing traditional intermediate relays, sensors, and solenoid valves with valve islands, and replacing traditional distributed wiring control actuators with fieldbus control systems. Keywords : Cigarette making unit, valve island, intermediate relay, control system. High-speed cigarette making units require many pneumatic control devices. In the original unit, the pneumatic control unit was implemented in a conventional manner. The pneumatic system was controlled by solenoid valves installed at different positions on the machine body, with an operating voltage of 11aVAC. The original control system had the following shortcomings: 1) The system contained a large number of discrete components and a large number of pipes and connectors required for connection. A failure of one component often caused the entire equipment to malfunction. The cables connecting the actuators, sensors, and solenoid valves were directly connected to the PLC's I/O module, making wiring cumbersome. 2) The pneumatic circuit was prone to pipe blockage and leakage, affecting the operating efficiency of the pneumatic system. 3) The electrical components were prone to problems such as poor soldering, short circuits, and poor contact, making debugging and maintenance difficult. 4) For equipment manufacturers, selecting, accepting, assembling, debugging, and installing all discrete components is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and errors often occur due to human factors. Therefore, considering the numerous and concentrated control solenoid valves on the coiling unit, we adopted valve island technology to improve the unit's pneumatic system. 1. Valve Island Technology A valve island is a complete system control unit integrating pneumatic solenoid valves, controllers with multiple interfaces and conforming to multiple bus protocols, and electrical input/output components with sensor input interfaces, analog input/output interfaces, and ASi control network interfaces. The second-generation valve island with fieldbus technology is a new generation of pneumatic-electric integrated control components developed by combining valve island technology with fieldbus technology. It significantly simplifies the pneumatic and electrical connections. Each valve island has one bus input E1 and one bus output E1, which can be connected in series with other fieldbus-enabled devices. Data exchange between the fieldbus-enabled valve island and the outside world is achieved through a single two-strand or four-strand shielded cable, which not only significantly reduces wiring but also reduces the space occupied by the device, making equipment installation and maintenance easier. The valve island has the following main features: 1) IP65 protection rating, eliminating the need for a control box enclosure; LED display with strong self-diagnostic capabilities. 2) The valve island integrates pneumatics, electrical systems, and control into one unit, employing centralized air supply and exhaust, significantly reducing the size of the pneumatic system. It saves on air pipe length and reduces airflow loss. 3) Equipped with a fieldbus interface, it facilitates easy function expansion and uses PROFIBUS-DP fieldbus communication, reducing wiring workload. 4) Digital transmission of operating parameters avoids drift and interference issues caused by analog signal transmission, improving system stability. The valve island can be manually adjusted or automatically controlled via a program. Operators can determine whether the corresponding valve is operating through PLC indicator lights, reducing debugging time.
