A Brief Discussion on Electromagnetic Interference Measurement Methods for Military Relays

2026-04-06 05:44:17 · · #1
Abstract: Based on the principle that a power switch generates a spike pulse signal and radiates interference signals to the outside at the moment of contact or disconnection, the factors causing electromagnetic interference in relay trigger circuits are analyzed. This allows for accurate and scientific reflection of the relay's own electromagnetic interference in relay electromagnetic interference testing, providing an auxiliary means for the standard research of electromagnetic interference measurement methods for military relays. Keywords: Relay; Electromagnetic interference; Electromagnetic environment; Antenna configuration 1 Introduction Relays, as automatic control components with isolation and switching functions, are widely used in systems such as satellites, missiles, rockets, aircraft, ships, tanks, artillery, nuclear plants, radar, communications, and computers, and are indispensable control components in various national defense projects. In military systems, relays mainly play the roles of signal isolation and transmission, signal expansion and integration, automatic control, and quantity and program power distribution. For example, a new type of missile uses 970 relays of various types. However, traditional contact relays suffer from high failure rates due to factors such as poor contact between contacts, wear caused by electric sparks and arcs, and back EMF of the input coil during storage and use. This makes relays indispensable yet also one of the most difficult components to guarantee in terms of electromagnetic interference and reliability. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) is a key indicator for OEMs to accept the relays they select, but currently there are no corresponding testing methods. Generally, the testing methods used for OEMs are applied to relays, which are unsuitable for the operation of relays as components. Therefore, researching measurement methods for relay EMC emissions and examining the effectiveness, applicability, and rigor of currently used testing methods is the purpose and background requirement of this project. Commissioned by relay manufacturers, our center is conducting preliminary research on EMC testing methods for military relays. The main purpose is to provide a basis for EMC design of military relay products, provide scientific data for OEM development and finalization, and fill a gap in this area in my country. Military relays are a type of military component, so developing EMC testing methods for military relays is essential and timely.
