I. Bridge Overview The Runyang Yangtze River Bridge not only ended the historical separation of Yangzhou and Zhenjiang, two famous historical and cultural cities, across the river and relying solely on boats for transportation, but also made a positive contribution to improving China's bridge construction level and accelerating its progress from a "major bridge-building country" to a "strong bridge-building country." China's bridge records will be broken, and the world's bridge rankings will be reshuffled. Construction of the Runyang Yangtze River Bridge began on October 20, 2000. Spanning the river and connecting islands, it starts in Yangzhou in the north and connects to Zhenjiang in the south, with a total length of 35.66 kilometers. The main line adopts a two-way six-lane expressway standard with a design speed of 100 kilometers per hour. The total investment was approximately 5.3 billion yuan, and the construction period was 5 years. On the morning of April 30, 2005, the world-renowned opening ceremony of the Runyang Yangtze River Highway Bridge was held at the Binjiang Square of Runyang Bridge Forest Park in Yangzhou City. Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, cut the ribbon for the opening of the Runyang Yangtze River Bridge. The Runyang Bridge connects the Beijing-Shanghai, Nanjing-Shanghai, and Nanjing-Hangzhou expressways, linking these three expressways with National Highway 312, the Tongsan National Highway, and the Shanghai-Chengdu National Highway, making it another important road network hub in the Yangtze River Delta region. The Runyang Yangtze River Highway Bridge is the first composite bridge on the Yangtze River in my country, consisting of suspension and cable-stayed sections. Its scale and technological sophistication are unprecedented in the history of bridge construction in my country. The bridge's construction set numerous domestic records, comprehensively demonstrating the highest level of highway bridge construction in my country to date. The Runyang Yangtze River Bridge boasts several domestic firsts: The main span of the suspension bridge on its south branch is 1490 meters, making it the longest suspension bridge in China and the third longest in the world; the main tower is 215.58 meters high, making it the tallest tower in China; the main cable is 2600 meters long, making it the longest cable in China; the steel box girder weighs 34,000 tons, making it the heaviest in China; the steel bridge deck pavement area reaches 71,400 square meters, making it the largest steel bridge deck pavement area in China; and the anchorages of the suspension bridge have nearly 60,000 cubic meters of cast concrete, making them the largest anchorages in China.
