Design and Implementation of Embedded CNC Punch Press

Abstract : Based on the study of embedded CNC theory, this paper analyzes the problems of current CNC systems with industrial microcomputers as the core, such as lack of customizability, complex structure, and poor stability. An embedded CNC punching machine control system is designed and implemented. The hardware adopts an ARM+DSP to build the main control platform, equipped with the required peripheral modules, and expands with a USB host controller and network card. The software environment is based on the uC/OS operating system, lwIP protocol stack, and embedded FAT16 file system. The hardware and software are customizable, and it has the advantages of high precision, strong reliability, user-friendly interface, flexible structure, and high cost performance. Introduction The development of Numeric control (NC) technology has progressed to the current CNC era with industrial microcomputers (IPCs) as the control core, going through stages such as discrete component systems, dedicated computer systems, and general-purpose computer systems. Because PCs were initially designed for file management and data processing, their CPUs are suited to complex instruction sets and possess strong numerical calculation, logic processing, and control functions. However, they are structurally complex, costly, have redundant and non-modifiable hardware, high power consumption, and low reliability. Furthermore, and more importantly, PC hardware is not designed for real-time control, often requiring hardware expansion to meet real-time control requirements. Moreover, PC operating systems are not designed for real-time control. Embedded systems, on the other hand, are "dedicated computer systems embedded into controlled objects or host systems." With the development of computer technology, in recent years, 16-bit and 32-bit embedded chips based on reduced instruction sets, such as ARM, DSP, and MIPS, have offered advantages such as simple and rich instructions, fast execution speed, strong real-time performance, abundant on-chip resources, and hardware floating-point operations. Another important trend in embedded system development is networking, which aligns perfectly with the development requirements of CNC technology.
