OpenCV stands for Open Source Computer Vision Library. It is a cross-platform computer vision library that is released as an open source and can run on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS operating systems. It consists of a series of C functions and a small number of C++ classes, implementing many common algorithms in image processing and computer vision.

OpenCV was created by Intel in 1999 and is now powered by Willow Garage. It is lightweight and efficient—consisting of a series of C functions and a small number of C++ classes, while also providing interfaces for languages such as Python, Ruby, and MATLAB, and implementing many common algorithms in image processing and computer vision.

OpenCV boasts a cross-platform mid-to-high-level API with over 300 C functions. It does not depend on external libraries—although some external libraries can be used. It is free for both non-commercial and commercial applications. Furthermore, OpenCV provides a transparent interface to Intel® Integrated Performance Primitives (IPP). This means that if IPP libraries are optimized for specific processors, OpenCV will automatically load them at runtime.

The computer vision market is huge and continues to grow, and there is no standard API in this area. OpenCV aims to become such a standard API, dedicated to real-world real-time applications. It has brought considerable improvements in execution speed through optimized C code writing, and even faster processing speeds can be obtained by purchasing Intel's IPP (Integrated Performance Primitives) high-performance multimedia function library.

OpenCV offers a rich set of visual processing algorithms, some of which are written in C. Its open-source nature means that, with proper handling, it can be fully compiled and linked to generate an executable program without requiring additional external support. Therefore, many people use it for algorithm porting. With appropriate modifications, OpenCV code can run normally on DSP systems and microcontroller systems. Currently, such porting is frequently used in universities as a graduation project for undergraduate students or a research topic for graduate students in related majors.
