Maintenance and care of the "three filters" on a diesel engine

Currently, a considerable number of drivers do not perform maintenance and upkeep of the "three filters" (air filter, fuel filter, and air filter) according to the time and regulations required in the instruction manual, resulting in frequent engine failures and premature entry into the maintenance period.

1. Key points for air filter maintenance.

In addition to strictly following the maintenance schedule and operating requirements specified in the instruction manual, the following points should also be noted when maintaining an air filter:

(1) The air filter's guide grille must remain undeformed and rust-free. Its tilt angle should be 30-45°. If it is too small, the resistance will increase, affecting the air intake; if it is too large, the airflow rotation will weaken, reducing the dust separation capacity. The blade surface must not have paint peeling off to prevent oxide particles from entering the cylinder. The direction of the dust outlet should be such that dust particles can be discharged.

(2) During maintenance, the ventilation mesh should be cleaned and the dust particles should not exceed 1/3 of the height. Otherwise, they should be removed in time. The dust collection cup opening should be tightly sealed, and the rubber sealing strip should not be damaged or lost.

(3) The oil level of the fine filter should meet the standard requirements. If it is too high, the oil will enter the cylinder and cause carbon deposits. If it is too low, the filtering effect will be reduced and the wear will be accelerated.

(4) If the metal mesh (wire) in the fine filter is used as a substitute, the diameter of its pores or metal wires can only be slightly smaller, not larger, and the filling amount must not be reduced, otherwise the filtration effect will be reduced.

(5) There must be no air leakage in the air intake pipe. Oil changes and cleaning should be carried out in a windless and dust-free place. High-pressure air should be used to blow the filter screen in a low-humidity environment. The blowing direction should be opposite to the direction of air entering the filter screen. During installation, the folds of adjacent filter screens should cross each other.

2. Key points for oil filter maintenance.

Oil filters must be maintained at the prescribed intervals, and the following points should be noted: Centrifugal oil filters. Special attention should be paid to the reinstallation after disassembly and cleaning when maintaining centrifugal fine filters:

① There should be no jamming. The inspection method is as follows: after reassembling the rotor, rotate the rotor forcefully by hand. If the rotor can rotate freely for 2-3 revolutions after releasing the force, it is considered qualified.

② Alternatively, the fine filter can be installed on the vehicle. Start the engine and run it at the rated speed for a few minutes. When the oil temperature reaches 70℃, turn off the engine. If, when listening outside the casing, the rotor is still rotating for more than 1.5 minutes, the installation is considered successful. If the above indicators are not met, the installation is unsuccessful and should be reassembled.
