What is a tilt sensor?

Inclinometers, also known as level sensors , levels, or tilt meters, are a type of angle sensor used to detect the levelness of a system. Since dual-axis inclinometers can simultaneously measure the levelness in two directions, they can be used to detect the levelness of the entire surface being measured.

Working principle of tilt sensor

Tilt sensors can be categorized into three types based on their working principles: liquid pendulum, solid pendulum, and gas pendulum. All three types are based on the fundamental theory of Newton's second law. Newton's second law states that while we cannot measure velocity within a system, we can measure acceleration. Given an initial velocity, linear velocity can be obtained through integration, leading to the linear displacement. Therefore, a tilt sensor is essentially an acceleration sensor utilizing the principle of inertia. When the tilt sensor is stationary, it is only subject to gravity; therefore, the angle between its vertical axis of gravity and the sensor's sensitive axis is the desired tilt angle.

Tilt sensor applications

Tilt sensors have a wide range of applications in various fields. In agricultural dump trucks, they provide reliable data for safe driving on sloping roads; in tower cranes, they provide data support for anti-tipping monitoring; in plate conveyors, they can directly measure the current tilt angle of the conveyor, greatly simplifying the installation process; in CNC machine tools, they enable accurate control of their geometric precision; in addition, tilt sensors have significant applications in aerial work platforms, automotive four-wheel alignment, satellite communication vehicle attitude detection, and ship navigation attitude measurement.

In modern security applications, tilt sensors are also used in drones and smart manhole covers. In drones, tilt sensors integrate gyroscopes and accelerometers to provide data for the flight control system to maintain level flight. This is a crucial stability monitoring application in the transportation and delivery of fragile goods. These sensors and gyroscopes, combined with accelerometers, can measure minute changes in motion, enabling tilt sensors to be applied to mobility applications such as gyroscope compensation in automobiles or drones.

In smart manhole covers, if a cover using a limit switch or tilt sensor is stolen, the system will immediately issue an alarm. Managers can then simply use their mobile phones to view the cover's location and any abnormalities on an electronic map in real time, allowing them to immediately dispatch engineers for inspection and repair. This year, 3,500 such smart manhole covers have been installed in Yizhuang, Beijing.

China's demand for tilt sensors has increased from 800-1 billion in 2005 to 1.4 billion today, with an annual increase of 21%.
