RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) is short for remote keyless entry system/remote car door switch. An RKE system allows users to lock or unlock car doors using a transmitter on a key fob. This transmitter transmits data to the car, and the user can activate the system by pressing a button on the key fob. In addition to its ability to unlock the car's brakes, RKE also serves an anti-theft function.
RKE System Composition
It consists of a receiver controller installed in the car and a transmitter carried by the user, namely a wireless remote control car door key.

RKE working principle
The RKE system allows users to lock or unlock car doors using a transmitter on the key fob. This transmitter transmits data to the car's interior, and pressing a button on the key fob triggers the system. This wakes up the CPU inside the RKE key fob, which then sends a data stream to the radio frequency (RF) transmitter. The data stream is typically 64 to 128 bits long, including a preamble, a command code, and a rolling code. The data stream is usually transmitted at a rate of 2 kHz to 20 kHz. The modulation method is amplitude keying (ASK), primarily to extend the key fob's battery life.

Transceivers particularly suitable for RKE systems
Melexis' MLX72013 low-power 425MHz to 445MHz transmitter, distributed by Worldway, is particularly suitable for RKE systems. This device is housed in an 8-pin SCIC-8 package. Its 1.9V to 5.5V supply range allows the device to be powered by a single lithium-ion battery, consuming only 5nA of supply current in standby mode.

When transmitting Manchester-encoded data, the Worldway MLX72103 supports data transmission rates up to 40kbps, consuming 2.9mA and 5.5mA of supply current, while providing -10dBm to +10dBm output power to a 50Ω load. A crystal-based phase-locked loop generates a precise carrier frequency, allowing the receiver to use a narrower IF bandwidth, thereby increasing transmission distance.
For RKE receivers, Worldway also offers the MLX71121, a superheterodyne ASK receiver ranging from 315MHz to 915MHz. The MLX71121 is a highly integrated single-channel/dual-band RF receiver based on a double-conversion superheterodyne architecture. It can be used in conjunction with the MLX72103.
