[April 24, 2017, Germany] The new ELX series EtherCAT terminal modules with intrinsically safe inputs/outputs feature a highly compact design, enabling direct connection to field devices located in explosion-proof hazardous areas 0, 1, and 2. Beckhoff's PC-based control systems now seamlessly integrate automation and process control technologies while retaining all the advantages of comprehensive EtherCAT system diagnostics.
Beckhoff offers a system integration solution to meet explosion protection requirements—a variety of explosion-proof components that help provide seamless solutions across all explosion-proof hazard zones from 0/20. In addition to the ELX series EtherCAT terminal modules with intrinsically safe interfaces, the product line includes new control panels and panel-mounted PCs—the CPX series—for explosion-proof hazard zones from 2/22, as well as TwinCAT control software with a variety of dedicated process control interfaces.
The ELX series of explosion-proof I/O terminal modules further expands Beckhoff's comprehensive EtherCAT terminal module system, which already covered over 100 different signal types. The combination of a highly compact I/O module and integrated safety barrier functionality results in high-performance EtherCAT terminal modules for connecting intrinsically safe field devices. The ultra-thin terminal modules can reduce control cabinet space requirements by up to 50%. This solution offers significant advantages, especially in confined and hazardous areas where complex and expensive enclosure technology is typically required. The elimination of external barriers significantly reduces installation workload and costs.
With upcoming ATEX and IECEx certifications, the ELX series meets all industry-specific explosion-proof technical standards and is suitable for most markets worldwide. This I/O terminal module is available in 12mm models with up to four intrinsically safe inputs and 24mm models with up to eight similar inputs.
With the introduction of the new ELX series terminal modules, users with explosion-proof requirements can benefit from the ultra-high-speed and precision EtherCAT technology. Its advantages include timestamp functionality, which ensures high measurement accuracy and high-precision synchronization even in widely distributed process control applications. Furthermore, the integrated EtherCAT diagnostic function with a data transmission speed of 100 Mbit can quickly and easily identify errors, minimizing downtime, simplifying maintenance, and improving system availability.
