[ September 4 , 2017, Germany ] In the process industry, there is a growing demand for groundbreaking and innovative automation solutions that can reduce costs. The implementation of universal platforms covering both industrial and process automation unlocks the greatest optimization potential. Beckhoff's PC- based control systems integrate process-specific protocols and interfaces and offer a wide range of products for hazardous areas, fully meeting this requirement. Full implementation of HART functionality in the I/O system and TwinCAT development environment ensures simple project planning and reliable commissioning.
TwinCAT automation software significantly reduces the development workload of process technologies because it allows for full HART functionality to be implemented directly from the development interface. In this way, the TwinCAT FDT (Field Device Tool) container can implement any field device driver (Device Type Manager, DTM). Therefore, the entire HART configuration can be efficiently implemented using a single tool.
Beckhoff's CommDTM integrates the TwinCAT platform into existing process control systems. With its help, DTM can be implemented in any FDT container. This works for all field devices connected to EtherCAT terminal modules that support HART functionality. These devices can be remotely configured and parameterized in known containers without direct PLC access, thus simplifying system operation and reducing it to the essentials. Furthermore, Beckhoff's OPC UA server and client enable secure global process flow data distribution, as well as convenient system control and remote maintenance capabilities.

The newly launched ultra-compact ELX series EtherCAT terminal modules also feature HART functionality. They can be installed in hazardous areas (Zone 0, 1, or 2) via intrinsically safe inputs/outputs.
Field devices are directly integrated into the automation system. This reduces wiring work and saves space, providing a cost-effective integrated solution for process applications. Furthermore, the new CPX series control panels and panel PCs enable Beckhoff's high-quality design and advanced multi-touch display technology to be used in explosion-hazardous environments.
The TwinCAT control and development platform fully supports the HART protocol and provides a comprehensive software library for process automation.
