Rockwell Automation's new servo motors help improve machine performance

Speed is money, especially for manufacturers involved in continuous material handling, printing, and roll feeding processes. With Rockwell Automation's next-generation Allen-Bradley Kinetix VPC servo motors, manufacturers can operate machines at faster speeds and with greater torque, significantly increasing machine throughput.

“Kinetix VPC servo motors can provide high-speed continuous torque for extended periods,” said David Rajala, product manager at Rockwell Automation. “Their internal permanent magnets allow for a weakened magnetic field, reducing electromagnetic resistance and enabling machines to carry loads continuously while maintaining speeds above the motor’s rated value. This allows manufacturers to operate roll production lines and winding machines at high speeds and constant power.”

The cooling fan and heat sink on the motor provide greater torque and higher power output. Furthermore, the improved encoder resolution and accuracy offer more precise and sensitive control, which is particularly important for the printing industry.

Kinetix VPC servo motors also reduce machine downtime in several ways. Their larger, more robust bearings extend the lifespan of L10 bearings by 60%. Furthermore, the optional single cable for power and feedback, compared to dual-cable motors, helps reduce installation, setup, and maintenance time. Additionally, quick-change fans allow for field replacement, keeping the machine running as much as possible.

The new motors achieve or exceed IE4 rated efficiency, resulting in energy cost savings compared to motors with IE3 or lower rated efficiency. Compared to larger, more energy-intensive motor and inverter solutions, the Kinetix VPC servo motors consume significantly less power when used with the Kinetix 5700 servo drive.

Rockwell Automation has specifically designed an integrated base mount method for Kinetix VPC motors, replacing the traditional flange mount method. This is significant for applications where base mounts are more suitable.

The Kinetix VPC servo motor is currently only compatible with the Kinetix 5700 servo drive. Rockwell Automation plans to develop functionality for other drives in the future.

As part of Rockwell Automation's integrated architecture platform, Kinetix VPC servo motors and Kinetix 5700 drives are programmed using the Rockwell Software Studio 5000 design environment. This integrated design approach helps accelerate machine deployment and reduces the likelihood of human error.
