EtherCAT terminal modules integrate high-precision power grid analysis functions.

[November 28, 2017, Germany] With the increasing convergence of traditional automation and power measurement technologies, Beckhoff has integrated its latest EL3783 power monitoring oversampling terminal module into standard control systems, enabling high-precision power grid analysis to be used in power generation systems as well. Most importantly, for three-phase AC systems with voltages up to 690V, synchronous analysis of three-phase voltage and current can be directly achieved in the PLC, with a data sampling frequency of up to 20kHz per second.

Beckhoff's EtherCAT terminal module EL3783 measures instantaneous values ​​for each phase of a three-phase system, measuring voltages up to 400/690 Vrms and currents at 1 or 5 Arms, with 16-bit resolution. Based on EtherCAT oversampling principles, this module simultaneously measures six channels with a time resolution of up to 50 μs, significantly faster than the controller's cycle time. Utilizing EtherCAT's distributed clock functionality, it can also achieve synchronized measurements with other EtherCAT devices in the system and accurately detect grid cascading faults, regardless of the system's size.

The control system can also provide detailed data containing relevant information. For example, this detailed data is needed if true RMS values ​​are used for performance calculations when analyzing power supply and current curves, or if the user uses a specific algorithm. Furthermore, the EtherCAT terminal module EL3783 features automatic current range switching, achieving 650% range for a 1A rated current signal with high measurement accuracy and a maximum error of only 0.2% (full scale value).

The EL3783 terminal module can be used with the TwinCAT 3 power monitoring software library TF3650 to form a high-dynamic measurement system integrated into a standard PC control system, enabling detailed power grid analysis. This allows for the determination of appropriate power grid measures to be taken during voltage dips (low-voltage ride-throughs). For example, condition monitoring can be achieved using harmonic analysis without the additional cost of accelerator sensors.

Beckhoff's EL3783 power monitoring oversampling terminal module can provide detailed current and voltage values ​​for three-phase power grids with voltages up to 690 V AC, while also meeting the stringent requirements of wind turbine applications.
