The role and impact of high-voltage frequency converter projects on industry development

Currently, China's high-voltage frequency converter market is mainly dominated by numerous foreign brands, and domestic enterprises are generally small in scale. There is a need for specialized companies to develop products to enhance the overall competitiveness of domestic high-voltage frequency converter companies. A frequency converter is a control device that uses the switching action of power semiconductor devices to convert industrial frequency power into electrical energy of another frequency. With the rapid development of modern power electronics and microelectronics technologies, high-voltage, high-power variable frequency speed control devices have become increasingly sophisticated. Previously difficult-to-solve high-voltage problems have been effectively solved in recent years through device series connection or unit series connection. Their application areas and scope are also expanding, making the efficient and rational use of energy (especially electrical energy) possible. Motors are major electricity consumers in the national economy, with high-voltage, high-power motors being particularly prominent, and most of these devices have energy-saving potential. Vigorously developing high-voltage, high-power variable frequency speed control technology is a sacred mission bestowed upon us by the times, and this mission will have profound significance.

Traditional high-voltage frequency converters , composed of thyristor rectifiers and thyristor inverters, had many drawbacks, including high harmonics that negatively impacted the power grid and motors. Recent advancements in devices such as IGBTs, IGCTs, and SGCTs have changed this situation. High-voltage frequency converters built with these technologies offer superior performance, enabling PWM inversion and even PWM rectification. They not only exhibit lower harmonics but also significantly improved power factors. High-voltage, high-power variable frequency speed control devices are widely used in various fans, pumps, compressors, and rolling mills in industries such as petrochemicals, municipal water supply, metallurgy, steel, and power energy.

Energy conservation in motor systems is one of the ten key energy-saving projects launched by the National Development and Reform Commission. Motor system energy conservation refers to the use of frequency converters to regulate the speed of general mechanical systems such as fans, pumps, and compressors to achieve energy savings. The 11th Five-Year Plan requires that the operating efficiency of motor systems be increased by 2%, achieving an annual electricity saving of 20 billion kilowatt-hours. This represents 580 million kilowatts, accounting for 60% to 70% of the nation's total electricity consumption. Of this, AC motors account for approximately 90%. Experts analyze that the average operating efficiency of various types of motors is currently 3% to 5% lower than that of foreign countries, with fans and pumps being 2% to 3% less efficient, and motor drive systems nearly 20% less efficient. If speed regulation is implemented on 10% of the total motor capacity, assuming an average annual operating time of 4,000 hours and a power saving rate of 20% to 25%, the annual power saving potential is 32 to 40 billion yuan.

Kilowatt-hours. Adding the potential energy savings from speed-regulating motors used to improve processes, the total potential energy savings is approximately 50 billion kilowatt-hours, equivalent to the annual power generation of a 10 million kilowatt thermal power plant. Therefore, motor systems represent the most promising area in China's energy-saving market.

It is understood that domestic brands currently account for about 70% of the active brands in the Chinese market, but their market share is only 20% to 25%; Japanese brands account for 40% of the market share; European and American brands account for 30% of the market share; and another 10% of the market share is held by brands from Taiwan.

The industrialization of the products in this project will not only enhance my country's technological level in the high-voltage frequency converter manufacturing industry and improve the international status and overall competitiveness of my country's power electronics manufacturing industry, but will also alleviate the country's energy shortage through motor energy conservation, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, and play a positive role in improving the quality of my country's industrial operations and promoting technological progress.
