Several misconceptions about PLC basics

2026-04-06 07:22:02 · · #1

Myth 1:

Some believe that learning PLC requires a very high level of education.

This idea is wrong. In fact, only a junior high school diploma is needed (why junior high school? Because physics is a subject that is taught after junior high school, and since we work with electricity, we still need to know some physics!).

The origin of PLC is based on our electrical engineering. PLC was originally designed for use by electricians, not for high-tech people. We should have absolute confidence in this. The ladder diagram in PLC is exactly the same as our relay circuit!

Myth 2:

The idea that to become an automation engineer, one must memorize a huge number of programming instructions is misleading.

It's important to understand how many PLC brands there are worldwide. We can't possibly remember all the instructions, but we must remember what functions a PLC can perform and how to generally implement them!

The functions (commands) of most major brands are largely the same.

And what we need to do is:

1) Find out how to use it. This manual has it. Generally, when we buy a PLC, we can ask the supplier to provide a copy or an electronic version.

2) Then use the corresponding functions (instructions) to achieve the control functions we need. Often, the same function can be achieved using different methods or instructions.

Myth 3:

To become an excellent automation engineer, you need to be proficient in many different brands of PLCs , including memorizing their instructions.

Of course, remembering is better than not remembering.

The most important thing is to master a systematic solution. The rest involves consulting the relevant manuals, identifying the corresponding functions and their programming methods, and then following the control logic.

Write the program into the PLC step by step.

Note: Programming methodology is a million times more important than memorizing instructions!!
