A brief introduction to rotary encoders

2026-04-06 06:00:19 · · #1

Let's start with a brief understanding of rotary encoders.

Rotary encoders can be used to measure rotational speed, acceleration, position, and direction. Encoders have applications in a wide range of mechanical engineering industries, such as material handling, logistics, and packaging.

In the field of industrial automation , rotary encoders can be used to measure angle, position, speed and angular velocity. By using racks, measuring wheels and constant force opening meters, we can measure the direction of linear motion.

Rotary encoders can convert mechanical inputs into electrical signals, which can be processed by counters, tachometers, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and industrial computers.

Definition and function of encoders:

In digital systems, it is often necessary to transform information (input) into a specific code (output). Encoding binary codes according to certain rules, such as 8421 code or Gray code, so that each code has a specific meaning (representing a number or control signal), is called encoding. A logic circuit with encoding capabilities is called an encoder. An encoder has several inputs, but only one input signal is converted into binary code at any given time. If an encoder has N input terminals and n output terminals, then the relationship between the output terminals and input terminals should satisfy N ≤ 2^n. For example, an 8-line to 3-line encoder and a 10-line to 4-line encoder have 8 inputs and 3-bit binary code outputs, and 10 inputs and 4-bit binary code outputs, respectively.
