[April 23, 2018, Germany] The human body is a system in which various organs work in coordination. It's like an automated system that perfectly combines intelligence, sensors, motion control, and vision. Now, with the release of TwinCAT Speech software, automated systems can also learn to hear and speak.
TwinCAT enables automation systems to operate as efficiently and smoothly as the human body: an industrial PC with TwinCAT runtime provides "intelligence," TwinCAT Motion Control ensures high-precision, high-dynamic motion, and the I/O interface connects to various sensors and bus systems to provide information. Recently, vision functionality has been added as a fully integrated component to TwinCAT Vision. With the new TwinCAT Speech software module, hearing and speaking capabilities are now fully comparable to human functions.
TwinCAT Speech supports industry-standard multilingual query and input/output capabilities. This enables more efficient and convenient interaction with automation systems. This technology can be applied across numerous industries, from machine design to building automation projects. For example, when working on equipment components, operators and maintenance personnel can easily check the impact of settings changes on the current control or simulation application without using traditional user interfaces. Furthermore, when monitored values reach system alarm thresholds, appropriate alarm messages can be emitted acoustically.
Voice input is available offline and is implemented using built-in Windows operating system features. In other words, it can be done without an internet or cloud connection. TwinCAT Speech's voice output is available both offline and online. Offline, it is supported through the corresponding Windows features, while online support is provided through Polly (Amazon's text-to-speech service). The realistic voice output of these applications is synthesized using deep learning technology. In addition to caching online-generated audio files, it also supports multiple voices.
Beckhoff's TwinCAT Speech software enables control systems to hear and speak, providing support for operators and maintenance personnel through convenient voice input and output channels.
