[June 11, 2018, Germany] The ELX series of EtherCAT terminal blocks has added analog input terminal blocks using TwinSAFE SC (single-channel) technology. These highly compact I/O terminal blocks can be used in hazardous areas requiring intrinsically safe signal transmission while also demanding functional safety.
The ELX series of compact terminal modules are ATEX and IECEx certified, enabling direct connection of intrinsically safe field devices to Zone 0/20 via integrated safety light curtains. Now, the new terminal modules, extended with TwinCAT SC technology, also achieve safety levels meeting PL d/Cat.3 of EN ISO 13849-1 or SIL 2 of EN 62061. This allows all process data from the system to be applied to safety technologies, such as monitoring fan speeds in explosively hazardous areas.
Among these new I/O ports, terminal modules with a width of only 12 mm and equipped with 2 or 4 analog input channels are available for 0/4…20 mA, RTD resistance sensors, thermocouples, and strain gauges. Additionally, single-channel terminal modules can be used for direct connection to intrinsically safe incremental encoders, which can evaluate diagnostically enabled NAMUR signals according to IEC 60947-5-6 standards.
TwinSAFE SC technology
Using TwinSAFE SC technology, safety tasks in any network or fieldbus can be achieved using standard signals. Data from the TwinSAFE SC terminal modules is transmitted to the TwinSAFE logic terminal modules, where it undergoes safety-related multichannel processing. Data from different data sources is analyzed, its authenticity is checked, and a "vote" is submitted. This is accomplished through sophisticated function blocks such as Scale, Compare/Voting (1oo2, 2oo3, 3oo5), Limit, etc. For safety reasons, at least one data source must be a TwinSAFE SC component.
The new ELX series EtherCAT terminal modules, incorporating TwinSAFE SC technology, enable highly compact safety solutions for hazardous areas.
