How can I implement IO-LINK smart connectivity and networking in a machine?

2026-04-06 08:09:58 · · #1

IO-Link supports bidirectional communication between the control layer and field devices (sensors, actuators). Various IO-Link devices can be bound to an IO-Link master station. Multiple IO-Link masters can be connected together via all common fieldbuses.

Why is fieldbus still needed?

Signals can be transmitted within a single machine (between sensors/actuators and PLCs) or across devices (between individual PLCs) via fieldbus. This method enables long-distance communication.

Networking of PLC and IO-Link master station (various fieldbuses) and connection of IO-Link field devices in the machine.

Over time, a wide variety of fieldbuses have been widely adopted in industrial applications. Because IO-Link is independent of the fieldbus, the hierarchy of devices with IO-Link functionality remains unchanged regardless of which fieldbus you use.

Connect the IO-Link sensor/actuator hub and the IO-Link pressure sensor to the IO-Link master station.

Components connected by IO-Link

The IO-Link master can be used with all common fieldbuses. It has one power output and one fieldbus input/output. Additionally, different numbers of ports are available depending on the specific application.

Fieldbus cables compatible with all common fieldbuses can connect PLCs and other fieldbus devices to the IO-Link master network.

The smart color sensor can be taught, its parameters set, and diagnostics performed via IO-Link.

IO-Link devices can be easily connected and replaced via a three-core sensor cable.
