After years of dedicated research and development and experience accumulation, SICK's first linear encoder employing magnetostrictive technology—the MAX48 series—is now officially on the market. The MAX48 linear encoder enables non-contact, fully integrated absolute position measurement within hydraulic cylinders, making it suitable for mobile work equipment operating in extremely harsh conditions. Utilizing innovative magnetostrictive technology to ensure superior reliability and equipped with advanced diagnostic functions, it helps customers significantly reduce operating costs. Its housing size of only 48mm makes it ideal for installation in existing cylinder structures. This linear encoder offers a highly competitive price-performance ratio and is favored by a wide range of customers.

Magnetostriction (TOF time-flight principle)
Due to the interaction of the two magnetic fields (1) and (2), an ultrasonic pulse wave (6) is induced in the magnetostrictive device (3). The ultrasonic pulse travels to the transducer system (5) and the sensor electronics generate an electrical output signal. The position signal is the result of the time elapsed between the induced current pulse (4) and the return signal of the acoustic pulse.
