Pilz: Specifications and Requirements for Button Colors

Button colors play a crucial role in electrical control. People frequently use various buttons to operate and control electrical equipment, with different colors representing different functions or operating states. Incorrect color selection can lead to operator misjudgment and malfunctions, potentially causing safety accidents. Therefore, it is essential to correctly select and use button colors during design, manufacturing, installation, and operation.

IEC 60204-1 specifies clear regulations and requirements for the color coding of operating buttons:

As shown in the table above:

1) The start/connect operation button should be white, gray, black or green, with white being preferred, but red is not allowed.

2) The emergency stop and emergency disconnect buttons should be red.

3) Stop/disconnect operation buttons should be black, gray, or white, with black being preferred, but green is not allowed. Furthermore, it is recommended not to use red near emergency operation buttons; in other words, red buttons are not suitable for installation next to emergency stop buttons.

4) Buttons used for alternating start/connect and stop/disconnect operations should preferably be white, gray, or black, but red, yellow, or green are not permitted.

5) For buttons that start operation when pressed and stop operation when released, the preferred colors are white, gray, or black, but red, yellow, or green are not allowed.

6) The reset button should be blue, white, gray, or black. If it is also used as a stop/disconnect button, it is best to use white, gray, or black, but green is not allowed.

Of course, it is not enough to distinguish buttons by color alone. It should also be combined with corresponding auxiliary coding methods (such as shape, position, and symbols) and add corresponding function description labels for identification.

Use labels and symbols to identify different functions.

From the standard, we can see that small buttons come in different colors and have different meanings. Color plays an invaluable role as a language of safety information. We should also use this silent language to draw people's attention to unsafe factors and effectively reduce or avoid accidents.
