Several points to consider when selecting linear modules

2026-04-06 05:43:22 · · #1

  Linear modules, also known as linear slides or single-axis robotic arms, are crucial for product usability and the functionality of the linear module. Therefore, proper selection is essential to avoid unnecessary problems during the purchase process.

I. Classification of Linear Modules

In terms of transmission method, linear modules on the market are mainly divided into two types: synchronous belt linear modules and ball screw linear modules.

Synchronous belt linear modules use a belt to drive the transmission shafts on both sides of the linear module, causing the sliders to move. The accuracy depends on the quality of the synchronous belt and the processing during assembly. Synchronous belt linear modules are generally not used for linear modules with high load and high precision requirements.

A ball screw linear module converts rotary motion into linear motion. A ball screw consists of a screw, nut, and balls; its function is to convert rotary motion into linear motion. Ball screws are widely used in various industrial equipment and precision instruments, enabling high-precision linear motion under high loads.

Based on the usage environment, linear modules can be divided into semi-enclosed and fully enclosed linear modules. Semi-enclosed models are generally used in general environments, while fully enclosed models are commonly used in clean environments.

II. Parameters to be considered when selecting a linear module

1. Load, i.e., the weight of the object that the module needs to support;

2. Effective travel requirement, i.e., the required distance (in mm) from one end to the other;

3. Motion accuracy requirement: Motion accuracy refers to the accuracy of repeatable motion, that is, the distance between the module and the origin when it returns to the starting point after 30 reciprocating cycles; 4. Operating speed requirement;

5. Application environment: Whether it is a vacuum environment, a harsh environment, or a clean environment, etc.;

6. Installation method selection: horizontal installation, wall installation, and vertical installation.

III. Considerations for Linear Module Selection

1. When the load is heavy or used vertically, it is recommended to use a linear module with ball screw drive;

2. The effective stroke requirement selected in practice is approximately 50mm greater than the actual required stroke, to allow for future expansion.

3. If high precision is not required but high speed is needed, synchronous belt drive can be selected. Compared with ball screw drive, synchronous belt drive has a certain speed advantage.

4. For applications requiring high precision, a ground lead screw can be selected, which can generally achieve a precision of ±0.005mm. For even higher requirements, a linear motor can be selected, which can achieve even higher precision.

The above is an introduction to linear module selection. We hope it helps you choose the right linear module for your needs more quickly and accurately.
