When machining with a wire EDM machine, the cutting path needs to be designed in advance. This raises the question of how well the path is designed. A well-designed cutting path can reduce the deformation of parts and optimize the wire EDM process, thus improving cutting quality and shortening machining time. Therefore, several principles must be followed when designing the cutting path.
I. Starting point and stopping point
Generally, the starting point of the wire EDM machine should be placed near the clamping point. Then, the clamped parts and the cutting segments separated from the components should be placed at the end of the cutting path, and a pause point should be set near the clamping end of the components.
Second, select the starting point.
When selecting the starting point for the cutting path, it can be set in a relatively flat area on the part surface that will not significantly affect the part's performance. If the part requires very high machining accuracy, the starting point should be set inside the wire insertion hole of the pre-fabricated wire EDM machine, and it should not be cut directly from the outside of the workpiece, otherwise deformation may occur at the cut point.
Third, reduce component deformation
The blank must maintain a distance from the cutting line, and this distance must not be less than five millimeters.
Fourth, multiple or two-stage cutting method
If the parts are complex, multiple or secondary cutting methods can be used, especially for concave mold cavity-shaped workpieces with relatively complex shapes, large cross-sectional changes, or large wall thicknesses. This secondary cutting method can reduce the deformation of the parts and ensure their machining accuracy.
When using a wire EDM machine, it is essential to design the cutting path in advance, and there are many things to pay attention to during the design process. This is crucial for producing more precise workpieces.
