SICK – OMNI Fieldbus Concept for Integrated Encoders

2026-04-06 04:29:45 · · #1

The integration of sensors with industrial fieldbuses has diverse requirements across industries, resulting in over twenty different communication systems on the market for various devices and systems. This is precisely why smart sensor manufacturers cannot afford to underestimate them. SICK's products offer a comprehensive range of integration options through the "OMNI Fieldbus Concept," which incorporates encoder and motor feedback systems.

Currently, combinations of single-turn and multi-turn encoders and motor feedback systems support over twenty interface standards, and these standards play a crucial role in industrial communication. Interfaces include incremental interfaces and various bus technologies, such as SSI, HIPERFACE® protocols, or HIPERFACE DSL® single-wire cable technology. If we add fieldbus systems used for production automation, such as DeviceNet, PROFIBUS, and CANopen standards, as well as Ethernet-based fieldbuses like EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, and EtherCAT® protocols, the coverage becomes nearly perfect.

As an international company with expertise in key areas, SICK is fully aware of the various specific needs related to fieldbus.

HIPERFACE DSL® – Digital Evolution

Through the HIPERFACE DSL® digital interface, SICK, a technology leader, presents a purely digital transmission protocol that minimizes the number of connecting cables between the inverter and the motor feedback system. This digital servo interface brings a completely new architecture and options to servo motor drives; it is purely digital, not hybrid (analog/digital), and creates a range of advantages for servo motor drive manufacturer Kollmorgen during the development phase.

Three Fieldbus Interfaces Enhance System Capabilities

According to Quest Trend Magazine, the most widely used real-time Ethernet protocols among equipment manufacturers include PROFINET, EtherCAT®, and EtherNet/IP, accounting for 70% of all protocols. For example, SICK's AFS60 absolute encoder (single-turn) and AFM60 absolute encoder (multi-turn) both utilize these three fieldbus interfaces. These encoders are not only extremely accurate and reliable and freely programmable, but they also significantly improve system performance. Therefore, for these two reasons, they are ideal solutions for manufacturers, process integrators, processing systems, production equipment, printing systems, and measurement and inspection equipment. All three interfaces offer an unparalleled range of diagnostic options, thereby optimizing system reliability and enhancing system capabilities, hence their widespread use.

The CANopen interface enables potentially broader diagnostic capabilities.

The AHS/AHM36 encoder offers reliable magnetic technology and is suitable for harsh environments. Its CANopen interface facilitates easy integration with networks and various configuration options, and it boasts powerful diagnostic capabilities. Two separate diagnostic memories (common/separate) provide significant convenience. Using the CANopen interface, data from both diagnostic memories can be directly transmitted to the controller via this protocol, allowing the controller to optimize the maintenance cycle of a specific device or system.
