Special reminder: Inadequate motor protection ratings can cause serious problems!

The IP protection rating system, drafted by the international IEC standardization organization, classifies electrical appliances according to their dustproof and moisture-proof characteristics. An IP protection rating consists of two digits: the first digit indicates the level of dustproofing and protection against foreign objects; the second digit indicates the degree of moisture and water resistance. A higher number indicates a higher level of protection.

During the design and manufacturing process of motor products, an appropriate protection level is selected based on the actual operating conditions of the product. Motor manufacturers are generally aware of this. However, end users often make inappropriate selections due to a lack of understanding, ultimately leading to serious electrical failures in the motor.

IP23 motors are a common type of protected motor, unsuitable for use in dusty or humid environments. Statistics from repair shops show that most IP23 motors have a significant amount of dust accumulated inside their windings, some of which even contains large amounts of conductive materials, posing a fatal risk to the motor windings. Therefore, motor manufacturers are strongly advised to communicate thoroughly with users to prevent accidents.

1. Meaning of IP dustproof rating codes

0 - No protection, meaning there is no special protection against people or objects from the outside world.

1 - Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 50mm; prevent the human body (such as the palm) from accidentally coming into contact with the internal parts of electrical appliances, and prevent the intrusion of foreign objects of a larger size (diameter greater than 50mm).

2—Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 12.5mm; prevent human fingers from touching the internal parts of electrical appliances; prevent the intrusion of medium-sized foreign objects (diameter greater than 12.5mm).

3 - Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 2.5 mm, and prevent tools, wires and similar small foreign objects with a diameter or thickness greater than 2.5 mm from coming into contact with the internal parts of the electrical appliance.

4 - Prevent the intrusion of solid foreign objects with a diameter greater than 1.0 mm, and prevent tools, wires and similar small foreign objects with a diameter or thickness greater than 1.0 mm from coming into contact with the internal parts of the electrical appliance.

5 - Prevent foreign objects and dust. It completely prevents the intrusion of foreign objects. Although it cannot completely prevent the intrusion of dust, the amount of dust intrusion will not affect the normal operation of the appliance.

6 - Prevent foreign objects and dust from entering. Completely prevent foreign objects and dust from entering.

Meaning of 2IP waterproof rating

0 - No protection; no special protection against water or moisture.

1 - Prevent water droplets from entering. Vertically falling water droplets (such as condensation) will not damage electrical appliances.

2—When tilted at a 15-degree angle, water droplets can still be prevented from seeping in. When the appliance is tilted from vertical to 15 degrees, dripping water will not damage the appliance.

3 - Prevent water from entering the appliance, and protect it from rain or water sprayed at an angle of less than 60 degrees to the vertical to avoid damage.

4 - Prevent splashing water from entering and damaging electrical appliances.

5 - Prevent water from entering the wound and protect against low-pressure water spray for at least 3 minutes.

6 - Prevent large waves from entering and protect against continuous, heavy water spray for at least 3 minutes.

7 - Prevent water from seeping in during immersion; protect from immersion in water up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes.

8 – Prevent water ingress during submersion, and protect against continuous immersion in water deeper than 1 meter. Precise conditions are specified by the manufacturer for each piece of equipment.
