A Discussion on the Machining of Keyways for Motor Shaft Extensions

2026-04-06 04:18:02 · · #1

Keyways need to be machined on the motor shaft at the shaft extension, fan position, slip ring position of wound rotor motor, and core position of reversible motor. During the keyway machining process, it is necessary to ensure that the keyway itself meets the dimensional requirements, including specific requirements for length, width, and depth, and also to ensure the relative position of the keyway with respect to the reference.

The symmetry of the keyway is a critical technical parameter, affecting customer use and installation. During production, necessary tooling and equipment must be used to ensure the quality of the machining. Currently, a common method is to use a vertical milling machine, equipped with V-blocks to support the bearing positions of the shaft, ensuring that the machining centerline is coaxial with the shaft's centerline.

It is particularly important to emphasize that the V-block is the reference point for the machining process. The stability of the reference point should be ensured through necessary inspections and maintenance. During the machining process, there should be no foreign matter on the mating V-shaped surfaces and bearing positions to prevent defects from occurring.

1. Introduction to Milling

Milling is a highly efficient machining method that uses a rotating, multi-edged cutting tool to cut a workpiece. During operation, the cutting tool rotates for the main motion, while the workpiece moves for the feed motion. Alternatively, the workpiece can be stationary, but in this case, the rotating cutting tool must still move, simultaneously completing both the main and feed motions. Milling machine tools include horizontal milling machines, vertical milling machines, and large gantry milling machines. These machine tools can be conventional or CNC machine tools. The cutting process uses a rotating milling cutter as the cutting tool. Milling is generally performed on milling machines or boring machines and is suitable for machining planes, grooves, various shaped surfaces such as splines, gears, threads, and special shapes on molds.

2. Classification of milling machines by structure

(1) Bench milling machine: A small milling machine used for milling small parts such as instruments and meters.

(2) Cantilever milling machine: A milling machine with the milling head mounted on the cantilever. The bed is arranged horizontally, and the cantilever can usually move vertically along the column guide rail on one side of the bed. The milling head moves along the cantilever guide rail.

(3) Ram-type milling machine: The spindle is mounted on the ram, the bed is arranged horizontally, the ram can move laterally along the saddle guide rail, and the saddle can move vertically along the column guide rail.

(4) Gantry Milling Machine: A milling machine with a horizontally arranged bed, and columns and connecting beams on both sides forming a gantry frame. The milling head is mounted on the crossbeam and columns and can move along their guide rails. Usually, the crossbeam can move vertically along the column guide rails, and the worktable can move longitudinally along the bed guide rails. Used for machining large parts.

(5) Plane milling machine: A milling machine used for milling planes and shaped surfaces. The bed is arranged horizontally, and the worktable usually moves longitudinally along the bed guide rails. The spindle can move axially. It has a simple structure and high production efficiency.

(6) Profile milling machine: A milling machine used for profile machining of workpieces. It is generally used for machining workpieces with complex shapes.

(7) Milling machine with lifting table: A milling machine with a lifting table that can move vertically along the bed guide rail. The worktable and slide saddle usually mounted on the lifting table can move longitudinally and laterally respectively.

(8) Radial milling machine: The radial arm is mounted on the top of the machine bed, and the milling head is mounted on one end of the radial arm. The radial arm can rotate and move in the horizontal plane, and the milling head can rotate at a certain angle on the end face of the radial arm.

(9) Bed-type milling machine: The worktable cannot be raised or lowered, but can move longitudinally along the bed guide rails, and the milling head or column can move vertically.

(10) Specialized milling machines: For example, tool milling machines: milling machines used for milling tools and molds, with high machining accuracy and complex machining shapes.
