Six Key Factors to Consider When Choosing an Industrial Automation System Integrator

There are many reasons to implement new control systems on mobile devices. However, the first question businesses should ask themselves is: "Is the device suitable for this control system, and will the market for the services offered by the business accept it?"

Furthermore, businesses need to consider how equipment operators will adjust and respond to the new control system. Just because competitors are doing it doesn't mean it's the right approach. If you've conducted evaluations and believe this will provide the best benefits for your business, then it's time to bring in a control system integrator.

Before deciding whether you need a control system integrator, you should answer the following questions:

• Do you have the engineering expertise to implement a new control system?

Do you have engineering skills?

• Has anyone on the team used Tier 4 diesel engines?

• Do you have any employees who can write programmable logic controller ( PLC ) code?

• Do any of your employees have experience in human-machine interface (HMI) design?

Has anyone ever controlled a proportional valve?

If the answer to this type of question is "no," then the company should consider partnering with a qualified systems integrator. If you have already decided to seek assistance with integrated control systems for mobile devices, then the company needs to identify the shortcomings of its existing systems (control units, hydraulic systems, and/or electrical systems) and what value they hope to add to your equipment. Having clearly defined objectives when developing working prototypes and production equipment can save significant amounts of money.

When selecting a control system integrator, consider the following six important factors:

1. Hydraulic and electrical control

To properly design equipment and understand how it should operate, integrators need not only PLC programmers, but also people with a comprehensive understanding of the equipment. They need to understand not only how all the components work together, but also how to optimize all its functions.

2. Good cooperative relationship with major suppliers

When problems arise and support is needed, a good working relationship with suppliers is crucial for obtaining solutions to urgent issues. This should be combined with knowledge and understanding of how things work. A prime example of this is the proportional valve and its complex characteristics.

3. The breadth and depth of personnel

Does the system integrator only have one or two engineers available to provide support? What type of assistance do you expect when resources are limited? What is the knowledge base of their technical support staff? How available are they, and do they travel frequently? The integrator you're looking for should have a team of engineers capable of meeting your needs.

4. Partnerships throughout the entire equipment lifecycle

Seek partners committed to helping your company succeed. If you're contracted to write PLC code from individuals instead of integrators/component suppliers, consider their motivation for long-term, sustainable project success. Will they be available when software, field support, and component support are needed? Do they have the appropriate systems for archiving different software versions? You need a systems integrator committed to being a partner, not just a company with programmers.

5. Constructive criticism and objections

Because excellent system integrators have extensive experience, they can share their ideas on equipment design and offer suggestions. This experience can be expected to benefit them.

6. Previous similar work experience

Ask about their project experience to see if they have any similar cases to yours. This can be challenging due to confidentiality agreements, but businesses should be able to get appropriate advice on equipment type selection.
