Project Challenges
Located in the heart of China, Wuhan Iron and Steel Group (WISCO) can only obtain large quantities of raw materials via the Yangtze River waterway due to its geographical location. However, the giant ocean-going vessels transporting imported ore can only reach the East China Sea; the cargo must be unloaded and transferred to smaller vessels before it can reach Wuhan.

With an annual iron ore processing capacity of 15 million tons, Zhoushan Port has become a major transshipment terminal for Wuhan Iron and Steel Group. The port has one unloading berth with a water depth of 27 meters , capable of accommodating large ships with a deadweight tonnage of 300,000 tons. Several other berths are available for loading cargo onto smaller vessels.
Giant loading and unloading facilities
The ship loaders, ship unloaders, and bucket wheel stackers arranged along the berths and ore yards of Wuhan Iron and Steel Port are among the largest civilian equipment in their respective fields. The design goal is to ensure the transport of 5,000 tons of ore per hour — provided all bridge cranes, conveying systems, etc., remain fully operational. Any serious malfunction would be a long and arduous journey for maintenance personnel. Therefore, the drive systems for all loading and unloading equipment must possess high load capacity, long service life, and minimal maintenance requirements.
Application solutions
Several different original equipment manufacturers ( OEMs ) have installed various bulk handling equipment at the port, all equipped with Nord drive systems. Three giant grab unloaders are operating at a 300,000 -ton unloading berth. These three machines are equipped with a total of 72 three-stage bevel geared motors supplied by Nord .
Nord Drive Systems can move these large pieces of equipment along the berth tracks into various work areas as needed. In addition, the three bucket wheel stacker-reclaimers (500 t/h) in the port's ore yard are also equipped with 72 three-stage bevel gear reducers.
