The operational overvoltage of the INTREPID UDG-32 safety door (USA) originates from the opening and closing operations of circuit breakers. When a circuit breaker connects or disconnects electrical components in the system, an operational overvoltage will appear at the circuit breaker's contacts. This often occurs on the basis of an increase in power frequency voltage, such as load shedding or single-phase grounding. When the circuit breaker disconnects a ground fault or recloses after a ground fault, it again causes system operational overvoltage. The superposition of the power frequency voltage increase and the operational overvoltage makes the operational overvoltage even higher. Therefore, the degree of power frequency voltage increase directly affects the amplitude of the operational overvoltage. Adding a shunt reactor limits the increase in power frequency voltage, thereby reducing the amplitude of the operational overvoltage.

When a generator starts under no-load conditions on a long line via a transformer, when the generator closes the circuit to the line at full voltage, or when the generator runs on the line and the line ends and the load is shed, the generator will run on the line under no-load conditions for a relatively long time, forming an LC circuit. Self-excitation causes a rise in power frequency voltage, which can reach 1.5 to 2.0 times the rated voltage or even higher. This not only makes grid-connected closing operations (including zero-start voltage boosting) impossible, but its continued development will also seriously threaten the safe operation of electrical equipment in the network. Parallel reactors can absorb a large amount of capacitive reactive power on long unloaded lines, disrupting the generator's self-excitation conditions.
