[Turck] Application of Distributed Automation in Pharmaceutical Packaging

2026-04-06 05:43:26 · · #1

The pharmaceutical industry is subject to strict regulations, and every step of the production process must be documented, including the packaging of the drugs.

Packaging machines used in the pharmaceutical industry must inspect the materials in each packaging unit and record the results. This process becomes more complex when a packaging unit contains multiple materials. The system needs to be particularly flexible to identify the frequently changing material flows within various packaging units. The verification procedures do not necessarily need to be integrated into a production line consisting of machines from different manufacturers.

The filling of the folding box is monitored during the production process.

A complete distributed system from a single source

Distributed solutions are highly beneficial when it is necessary to update tracking and logging capabilities: they can be accomplished with minimal adjustments to existing systems and controllers.

Turck offers complete turnkey solutions, including RFID systems, HMI ( Human Machine Interface) devices, and I/O modules, including connectivity technologies. The packaging unit is equipped with an adhesive label; as the product is placed at each station within the packaging, a read / write head writes the information onto the packaging unit label.

At the end of the process, the tag information is compared with the set value of the system's main controller. If the values differ, the ID system will activate an actuator, which will remove the corresponding device from the system and perform a manual check.

The trigger sensor and read / write head are mounted below the conveyor belt to save space.

turnkey system

A BL20 CODESYS controller control system connected to the HMI . The entire system is delivered as a turnkey solution, and factory acceptance testing ( FAT ) can be performed in Turck. Furthermore, the magnetic field of the read / write head has no effect on the medication.

HMI indicates errors in the packaging process and allows for changes to be made within the process workflow.

Flexible mapping of 30 package configurations

The configuration of complete sets of equipment often changes. This ID system includes 30 configuration options, which users can easily select via the HMI when production changes . The system communicates via the Turck multi-protocol Ethernet standard and can operate on PROFINET , Ethernet /IP , or Modbus TCP networks without user intervention. The ID system's controller is programmed using CODESYS .
