What is the function of an isolated power supply?

2026-04-06 05:33:38 · · #1

In some cases, isolation refers to electrical isolation between input and output, input and ground, and output and output. The purpose of isolation is to protect the safety of the system. When interference or pulses are present at one end, they will not affect other parts due to mutual isolation.

In laboratories or high-requirement environments, for the safety of laboratory personnel, the input power supply is generally isolated from the mains power using a 1:1 power frequency transformer. This way, laboratory personnel will not be at risk of electric shock no matter which wire they touch, because the isolated power supply is not connected to the ground.

In industrial control equipment, it is sometimes required that the power ground wires of two systems be isolated, such as to isolate ground noise or high common-mode voltage. A DC-DC converter with a transformer is used to separate the two power supplies, making them independent of each other, thereby achieving the above objectives!

Each module is powered independently to prevent damage to other modules caused by high-voltage discharge or other reasons in one module. This ensures that each module operates independently without interference.

Isolation refers to the use of isolation transformers between the input and output terminals. These transformers can be either power frequency or high frequency transformers, but they effectively isolate the input and output, preventing the risk of electric shock.

What are the different types of isolation?

Two-end isolation: Input and output are mutually isolated

Three-terminal isolation: input, output, and power supply.

Four-terminal isolation: signal input, signal output, power input, isolated power output.

The main function of the isolated power supply module is:

1. Safety Isolation: Isolation of high-voltage and low-voltage circuits, IGBT isolation, surge protection, and lightning protection (such as isolation protection for medical electronic equipment that comes into contact with the human body);

2. Noise isolation: (isolation between analog and digital circuits, isolation between strong and weak signals);

3. Elimination of grounding loops: Distributed power supply system for remote signal transmission.

4. Voltage Transformation

Stabilized AC mains power supply, remote DC power supply, distributed power supply system, battery power supply.
