High power density switched capacitor intermediate bus converters for 48V data center applications

Flex Power Modules has released the BMR310, a non-isolated switched-capacitor intermediate bus converter (IBC). This product provides high power density for data center applications, thereby improving board space utilization and freeing up space for other components.

The BMR310 is manufactured based on Infineon Technologies' proprietary Zero-Voltage Switched Capacitor (ZSC) technology, achieving over 98% efficiency at half load. It features a small package and can continuously deliver up to 875W of output power. It operates within an input voltage range of 40V to 60V, providing an unregulated output voltage of 10V to 15V.

For data center and high-performance computing (HPC) applications, the industry is moving away from 12V and towards 48V power distribution to reduce distribution current and power loss. To meet this growing demand, Infineon's ZSC technology offers the highest efficiency and power density for applications using a 48V intermediate bus voltage. This is thanks to capacitor power transfer and the use of power MOSFET soft-switching technology, which significantly reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) and enables a simple and low-risk transition from traditional 12V systems to 48V buses.

“Infineon’s ZSC topology represents a significant change in power distribution, enabling us to provide the high efficiency and power density that data centers need now and in the future,” said Mikael Appelberg, Chief Technology Officer of Power Modules at Flextronics.

The BMR310 is designed for horizontal mounting and is only 10.3mm high, making it ideal for systems with large heatsinks or cold plates where space is limited. Its dimensions are 58.4mm × 25mm × 10.3mm (2.3in × 0.98in × 0.41in). Currently, it is available with a baseplate mounting system, but future models will also offer an open-type option.

To maximize its operating life, the BMR310 includes internal overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature protection. Like all Flextronics power modules' DC/DC converters, it complies with IEC/EN/UL 62368-1 safety standards.

This product utilizes passive droop load sharing technology to support parallel operation of converters, allowing multiple converters to be connected in parallel to provide higher power when needed. The BMR310 is also compatible with the Flex Power Designer software tool, and this new converter includes a PMBus interface for digital control.

The BMR310 will be available in November 2021, but evaluation samples are now available for OEM orders.
