What are the differences between blade batteries and ternary lithium batteries, and which is better?

The biggest advantage of lithium-ion batteries is that they have no memory effect and operate over a wide temperature range. Even during prolonged operation, they can maintain stable body temperature. Lithium-ion batteries are also divided into two types: ternary lithium batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries.

ternary lithium battery

Ternary lithium batteries generally refer to ternary polymer lithium batteries, which are lithium batteries that use ternary cathode materials such as lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (Li(NiCoMn)O2) or lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide. Ternary composite cathode materials are made from nickel salts, cobalt salts, and manganese salts, and the ratio of nickel, cobalt, and manganese can be adjusted according to actual needs. Batteries with ternary materials as cathodes are safer than lithium cobalt oxide batteries, but the voltage is too low. When used in mobile phones (the cutoff voltage of mobile phones is generally around 3.0V), there will be a noticeable lack of capacity.

Lithium iron phosphate batteries

Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are lithium-ion batteries that use lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) as the positive electrode material and carbon as the negative electrode material. A single cell has a rated voltage of 3.2V and a charging cut-off voltage of 3.6V~3.65V. Lithium iron phosphate batteries have advantages such as high operating voltage, high energy density, long cycle life, good safety performance, low self-discharge rate, and no memory effect.

Which is better, the blade battery or the ternary lithium battery?

Lithium-ion batteries offer greater flexibility in energy storage compared to traditional batteries. They support fast charging, quickly replenishing the battery to over 80% capacity, and have strong charge retention. They also boast high output power, long lifespan, and are free of toxic substances.

The drawbacks of ternary lithium batteries are obvious. Most lithium-ion batteries currently operate using a liquid or gel-like mechanism. Ternary lithium batteries also operate in this manner. In winter, due to the sudden drop in temperature in northern regions, while the liquid or gel inside the battery may not solidify, its flow slows down. This results in a decline in the battery's performance, leading to insufficient power or even complete malfunction.

The blade battery, actually called a super lithium iron phosphate battery, is named so because its arrangement resembles a blade inserted into the battery pack. Compared to ternary lithium batteries, this blade battery is more resistant to low temperatures, has a larger heat dissipation area in its cells, and can achieve a higher energy density.

However, while the density of blade batteries is not as high as that of ternary lithium batteries, they offer higher safety performance. Compared to the instability of ternary lithium batteries, blade batteries have a more robust safety margin and a longer lifespan.
