A gloss meter is an instrument used to measure the gloss of an object's surface. This instrument uses many optical terms that may be difficult to understand for those not familiar with the optics industry. Therefore, we will explain the meaning of these terms based on customer needs and commonly used gloss meter terminology.
1. Luminous flux
The light power emitted from a light source in all directions is defined as the energy of light emitted per unit time, denoted by φ, and the unit is lumen (lm).
2. Luminous intensity
The luminous flux radiated by a light source within a unit solid angle is defined as I, and its unit is the candela (cd). 1 cd represents the luminous flux radiated within a unit solid angle of 1 lm.
3. Illuminance
The luminous flux from a light source to a unit area is defined as E, and the unit is Lux, abbreviated as lx.
4. Reflectance factor
The ratio of the lumens of light emitted from the surface of an object to the lumens incident on that surface is defined as R. This definition is frequently used in gloss meters, just as people rely on reflected light when viewing objects, so too do gloss meters measure light.
5. Luminance
The brightness of an object's surface is defined by L, which represents the luminous flux reflected by a surface. Light intensity is generally measured by the total amount of light shining on a plane, called incident light or illuminance. If the intensity of light is measured by the amount of light reflected from a plane to the eye, this light is called reflected light or brightness. For example, white paper typically absorbs about 20% of incident light and reflects about 80%; black paper reflects only 3% of incident light. Therefore, white and black paper differ greatly in brightness.
