Causes of lithium-ion battery explosions
1. Puncture: Compared to short circuits and overcharging, puncturing a lithium-ion battery is also a very unwise thing to do. If a lithium-ion battery is punctured by any hard object, the lithium ions inside will directly react chemically with oxygen in the air, resulting in violent combustion.
2. Prevent high temperatures and fire: High temperatures or fire can also cause lithium-ion batteries to explode and burn. Especially in hot summers or inside a car exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, the ambient temperature of lithium-ion batteries can exceed their normal storage temperature.
3. Prolonged overcharging of battery cells: Under prolonged charging conditions, overcharging and overcurrent can lead to high temperature and high pressure, posing a potential hazard. Lithium-ion batteries may experience sudden discharge with a large current under specific temperature, humidity, or poor contact conditions, potentially resulting in spontaneous combustion or explosion.
4. Charging can cause battery explosion: Playing on your phone while charging will increase the charging time. Prolonged charging will cause the phone to overheat, making it more likely to explode.
Causes of lead-acid battery explosions
1. Poor battery quality: Inferior or damaged separators allow active material to pass through, resulting in incomplete or direct contact between the positive and negative plates;
2. Overcharging: When lead-acid batteries are overcharged, the water in the battery electrolyte will be electrolyzed. After electrolysis, hydrogen and oxygen will be produced. These are flammable and explosive gases. When the hydrogen content in the battery or air accumulates to the explosion limit, it is very likely to burn or explode when exposed to an open flame.
3. Clogged vent: Due to the vent of a traditional lead-acid battery being blocked, the battery will burst first. The burst will cause the battery to vibrate, and if the terminal connection is not secure, sparks will appear, which will lead to an explosion.
