Abstract: This paper introduces the development history of linear motors and the progress of linear motor servo feed systems in high-speed precision machine tools, and discusses some key technical issues of linear motor servo feed systems. Keywords: linear motor; machine tool ; feed drive system; key technology 1 Development of Linear Motors The development of linear motors has a long history. As early as 1845, Wheatstone proposed and made a rudimentary linear motor. At that time , he wanted to use it to drive the shuttle on the loom, but he was unsuccessful. However, this idea led to the creation of modern electromagnetic guns. In 1905, a proposal was made to use linear motors to power trains. Although this failed to materialize due to its lack of competitiveness in terms of economy and reliability, researchers continued to focus on the idea. In recent decades, maglev trains have finally achieved experimental and trial operation on test lines in countries such as Germany and Japan, achieving experimental application and success. In 1945, Westinghouse Electric Company in the United States successfully developed an electric traction aircraft catapult. Subsequently, the United States used linear motors to create electromagnetic pumps for pumping liquid metals such as potassium and sodium. In 1954, the Royal Aircraft Company in the United Kingdom used a double-sided flat DC linear motor to create a device for launching missiles.
