Economic Analysis and Problems of Using Variable Frequency Drives in Power Plant Condensate Pumps

Abstract: This paper analyzes the economic benefits of changing the frequency of the condensate pump in Guangzhou power plant, and analyzes the problems of heat radiation of the inverter and vibration of the motor that occurred during the operation after the modification, and proposes solutions. These experiences can provide reference value for the application of similar frequency converters. Key words : Inverter, Economic benefits, Heat radiation, Vibration 1 Introduction Guangzhou Power Plant is located in Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. It was first built in 1935 and has undergone several renovations. Now the plant has four 60MW extraction steam heating units (Units #1 to #4) and one 25MW waste heat comprehensive utilization unit (Unit #0). It is a major heating power plant in Guangzhou City. The centralized steam supply has not only made a great contribution to the environmental protection of Guangzhou City, but also created certain economic benefits. In the current challenging environment of competitive bidding for power grid access and rising coal prices, to enhance competitiveness and achieve better economic benefits, it is imperative to vigorously promote energy-saving and consumption-reducing renovations, striving for increased safety and efficiency. Since 2003, the plant has implemented a series of energy-saving and consumption-reducing renovation projects, including the conversion of condensate pump motors to frequency converters using ABB Electric Drives Systems Ltd.'s ACS800 frequency converter, which has yielded significant energy-saving results. However, some problems arose during operation. After analysis and summarizing lessons learned, targeted solutions were proposed. Currently, all condensate pumps are operating well using the frequency converters.
