Electromagnetic compatibility improvement of inverter power unit

Abstract : The power unit of a multi-level series voltage source high-voltage frequency converter operates in a multi-level, high-electromagnetic environment, where electromagnetic interference (EMI) severely threatens the stable operation of the device. Improving the EMI performance of the power unit enhances the stability of the device's operation. Six EMI performance tests were conducted on the power unit, and five improvements were made based on the identified issues. The power unit's performance against electrical fast transient/burst (EFT) pulses was improved from 2.0kV, 24s to 3.0kV, 300s. After the power unit modification, continuous operation tests were performed on the entire unit, eliminating the previous defect where the power unit frequently reported false faults during continuous operation.

1 Introduction

The main topology of the multi-level unit series voltage source inverter consists of a phase-shifting transformer and 18 identical power units. In each power unit, the main circuit comprises a diode rectifier bridge, thyristors, IGBTs, and other power devices. The controller uses a CPLD, AVR, fiber optic receiver, and fiber optic transmitter. The large-scale integrated circuits, AD converters, and communication control chips within these components are highly sensitive to electromagnetic interference.
