Abstract: In the turning process of cam parts, the tool needs to perform rapid reciprocating motion, and its drive unit should have high speed, acceleration, and position. This paper studies the composition of a servo tool post system in depth; selects the linear drive element of the tool post; and establishes a mathematical model and control system for a DC linear motor. The established servo tool post system uses a linear motor as the servo drive element for the tool, adopts an up-and-down control structure system and a DSP real-time servo controller, and employs an advanced dedicated PID control strategy. This satisfies the requirements of cam turning for speed, acceleration, position accuracy, and stroke. Keywords : Cam turning; Servo; Linear motor Introduction To turn the contour curve of a cam, the distance between the cutting point and the lathe spindle rotation center must be changed according to the workpiece's rotation angle. That is, the workpiece's rotation angle and the tool's radial position must satisfy a certain relationship, which is determined by the cam's contour curve. Traditional cam turning uses the contouring method to satisfy this motion relationship, but this method requires the manufacture of a high-precision template. During the machining process, the template wears, reducing the machining yield and limiting the machining speed. With the increasing demand for high-speed and high-precision machining, replacing traditional templates with CNC systems is an inevitable trend. 1. Servo Tool Post System Composition The structure of the servo tool post system for cam machining in this paper is shown in Figure 1. It consists of a spindle rotary encoder, a tool position sensor, a cam curve processing module, a position controller, a power amplifier, and servo drive components. The part within the dashed box is implemented in software. The cam curve processing module establishes a mapping relationship between the spindle rotation angle and the linear displacement of the tool according to the contour curve requirements. By measuring the rotation angle of the lathe spindle, the cam curve processing module outputs a position control signal for the linear motion of the tool. After being amplified by the servo system, this signal drives the turning tool to reciprocate, machining the cam contour curve.
