Abstract : Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are electrical devices used in production sites to control and regulate the frequency of power supplies. Variable frequency speed control is one of the main methods for industrial products to achieve speed regulation, and achieving energy saving in product operation through VFDs has broad application prospects. This article discusses the methods and significance of using VFDs to achieve energy saving in some products. Keywords : VFD; energy saving; variable frequency speed control 0 Introduction VFDs have been widely used in many aspects of industrial production. Whether in the automation of various handling machinery or in improving industrial output and productivity, VFDs have fully demonstrated their superiority. This article mainly explores the methods and significance of using VFDs to save energy in the operation of air conditioners, fans, and water pumps. 1. Methods for energy-saving operation of variable frequency air conditioners using frequency converters The basic structure of an AC variable frequency air conditioner is shown in Figure 1: This variable frequency air conditioner is a split-type air conditioner. The control of both the indoor and outdoor units is accomplished by a single-chip microcomputer. The two units communicate with each other using the computer's communication function to control the entire system. The variable frequency air conditioner first obtains information such as outdoor temperature, outdoor heat exchanger temperature, compressor temperature, transistor temperature, AC output voltage on the socket, and DC loop current from the computer. It then compares this information with the communication data obtained from the indoor unit to generate the drive signal for the frequency converter, which generates the variable frequency power supply to drive the three-phase asynchronous motor. The energy-saving analysis of variable frequency air conditioner operation is as follows: (1) Start-up energy saving. Ordinary air conditioners with on/off control generally have high energy consumption due to their large starting current (8 to 10 times the rated current). Variable frequency air conditioners, on the other hand, use constant U/F control to keep the starting current close to the rated operating current, thus resulting in low energy consumption. Inverter air conditioners start with a power supply frequency of approximately 100Hz, twice that of mains frequency power. After startup, the high power frequency allows the compressor to operate at high speed, maximizing its power output. This significantly reduces the time required for the air conditioner to reach the set temperature (i.e., improve performance), thus achieving energy savings. Once the indoor temperature reaches the set point, the power supply frequency automatically decreases under the inverter's regulation, and the inverter air conditioner automatically enters low-frequency operation.
