Abstract : This paper introduces the basic principles, characteristics, application fields, selection principles, and energy-saving benefits of variable frequency speed control devices. Keywords : Variable frequency speed control; Energy saving; Principle; Frequency converter; Application AC motor variable frequency speed control devices are highly efficient, energy-saving, material-saving, and high-quality mechatronic products. Due to their significant energy-saving effects (generally above 30%), wide speed ratio, small size, and wide application fields, they have been widely used in industrialized countries such as Europe, the United States, and Japan. Statistics show that in Japan in 1985, AC accounted for 80% of speed control and DC for 20%. Japan has now completely phased out DC power and drive devices. AC variable frequency speed control devices represent the development direction of automated motors and are currently the most widely used, most efficient, and best-performing new power technology in the world. Currently, foreign AC variable frequency speed control technology has evolved from sinusoidal pulse width modulation voltage type to voltage-type vector control and current-type frequency conversion. AC variable frequency speed control technology has opened up broad avenues for energy saving. This technology is particularly effective in saving energy in fans and pumps (saving 40-50% of usable power). When applied to textile machinery, it can increase rayon production by 20-30%. Since fans and pumps account for about 50% of my country's total industrial electricity consumption, it is clear that promoting AC variable frequency speed control technology is crucial for energy conservation. Statistics show that in 2000, the total installed capacity of fans and pumps in my country reached 210 million kW, with an annual power consumption of 390 billion kWh. If variable frequency speed control were adopted for these loads, energy savings could exceed 20%, effectively alleviating the current power shortage and significantly improving economic efficiency. Surveys indicate that converting about 50% of the motors in approximately 70% of fans and pumps requiring variable load operation to variable speed operation, with a 20% energy saving rate, represents a potential energy saving of approximately 720 × 10⁸ kWh. Therefore, understanding, researching, and promoting the application of variable frequency technology is of great significance.
