As we all know, the S7-1500 PLC is used in medium and large-scale projects and is an upgraded version of the S7-300/400 PLC. So what exactly are the upgrades?

1. Human-centered exterior design

The CPU is equipped with an LED display screen, which can easily display CPU status and fault information.

The front connector has wiring positions and provides dedicated power components, shielding brackets, and wire clips to make wiring easier and more reliable.

2. Built-in Ethernet port

It boasts strong networking capabilities, fast processing speed, and high diagnostic capabilities and security.

The S7-300 PLC is a medium to large-sized PLC but lacks an Ethernet port, which makes programming and debugging very inconvenient. CP modules with expanded Ethernet ports cost tens of thousands of yuan. The emergence of the 1500 PLC successfully solved this problem.

For example, compared to the S7-300/400 PLC, the S7-1500 PLC uses a new backplane bus technology, employing high baud rates and high transmission protocols, resulting in faster signal processing speeds.

All S7-1500 CPUs integrate 1-3 PROFINET interfaces, enabling low-cost and rapid configuration of field-level communication and corporate network communication, while only a few S7-300/400 PLC CPUs integrate PROFINET interfaces.

The S7-1500 PLC module integrates diagnostic functions at the channel level, requiring no additional programming. When a fault occurs, it can quickly and accurately identify the affected channel, reducing downtime, a feature not found in the S7-300/400 PLC.

3. Comprehensive control functions, supporting multiple data types.

The maximum length of basic data types in S7-1500 PLC is 64 bits, while the maximum length of basic data types supported by S7-300/400 PLC is 32 bits.

The S7-1500 PLC supports three pointer types: Pointer, Any, and Variant, while the S7-300/400 PLC only supports the first two. This makes the programming of the S7-1500 PLC more flexible.

Leveraging Siemens PROFINET functionality and the PROFIdrive library, the S7-1500 PLC can control servo drives without requiring additional configuration modules.

In addition, the S7-1500 PLC supports the TRACE function for all CPU variables, which improves debugging efficiency and optimizes the performance of drives and controllers.

4. Highly efficient configuration and programming, facilitating information collection and viewing.

The S7-1500 PLC is seamlessly integrated into the TIA Portal software, making its operation simple and quick, whether it's hardware configuration, network connection and supervisory control configuration, or software programming.

The dedicated configuration programming software for S7-300/400 PLC is the classic STEP7, and the upper-level configuration software is WinCC. Compared with TIA Portal software, some operations are cumbersome (for example, each program block needs to be saved separately, and the save operation cannot be performed when there is a syntax error).

It has to be said that the S7-1500 PLC is the first choice for the industrial control industry and industrial control professionals in many medium and large projects. Learn this course to help you easily master the S7-1500 PLC!
