Abstract : This article introduces the basic working principle of linear motors and their application in the production of float glass in our company, clarifying the general principle of linear motors and the important practical significance of applying linear motors to improve the quality of float glass production. Keywords : Linear motor, basic principle, application, practical significance 1. Introduction The research and development of linear motors can be traced back to the late 19th and first half of the 20th century, but they entered the practical application stage after 1970, gaining widespread attention due to the research on maglev trains. Today, this novel and unique motor is widely used in many fields such as maglev trains, elevators, production conveying, magnetohydrodynamic pumps, float glass production, and liquid metal conveying and stirring. The application of linear motors in float glass production is mainly as a molten tin flow controller. It generates a lateral thrust of adjustable strength applied to the molten tin through the action of an electromagnetic field, which can artificially control the lateral flow and longitudinal backflow of the molten tin. In terms of process, this is of great significance to float glass production. Linear motors have been used in float glass production abroad for over 30 years. Most float glass production lines in China use the "Luoyang Float Glass" technology, which features narrow flow channels and a large exposed area of molten tin, leading to numerous associated problems. From the perspective of improving glass product quality, applying linear motors is a highly effective method. However, China only first used linear motors on a float glass production line in 1997, and their use has gradually expanded since then. Unfortunately, there are very few reports on the working principle of linear motors and their application in float glass production. In reality, this technology is far from mature, which hinders technical exchange and improvement, and objectively restricts the promotion and application of linear motors and the upgrading of the quality of domestically produced float glass products. 2. Basic Working Principle of Linear Motors A linear motor, figuratively speaking, is a thrust device that directly converts electrical energy into linear mechanical motion by unfolding the stator, rotor, and air gap of a rotary motor into a straight line (as shown in Figure 1).
