PID control and fuzzy control of linear motors

Abstract: This paper designs and applies a PID controller to a high-speed mail sorting system driven by linear induction motors. To achieve better control characteristics, a fuzzy controller is proposed and designed for this system. The paper compares and analyzes the application of these two controllers in the system, pointing out that fuzzy control is more suitable for linear motors driving similar systems where higher control accuracy is required. Introduction Traditional parcel sorting machines use a rotary motor to convert linear and circular motion through worm gears and chains. This transmission method is noisy, has low transmission speed, and low parcel sorting efficiency. In the late 1980s, some universities in China collaborated with some postal research units and trial-produced a small number of simple linear motor-driven sorting machines. In recent years, China has imported high-speed intelligent parcel sorting machines driven by linear motors, which have greatly improved operating performance and sorting rate. However, their price is nearly $3 million. Therefore, the localization research and development of the national technological innovation project—the belt-type high-speed brush sorting machine—funded by the State Economic and Trade Commission, was completed in March 2000 and passed the appraisal and acceptance. Its performance exceeded foreign levels, while its price was only one-third of that of foreign machines. The author of this article undertook the work on the linear motor and its control system for this project. The control system adopted PID control.
